By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Paula man was found guilty of resisting arrest and related charges stemming from an April incident that involved illegal weapons, according to a Santa Paula Police Department spokesman. Timothy Reyes, 43, received a suspended sentence and three years probation for his part in the April 6, 2004 incident. According to SPPD Det. Gary Marshall, Reyes’ trial lasted three days and involved the testimony of several SPPD officers.Reyes was arrested for physically confronting a police officer after he tried to interfere as a group of young men, including his son, were being questioned about illegal weapons including clubs. Reyes arrived during the investigation – which occurred on the 300 block of Steckel Drive at about 11 p.m. – and “ignored officers’ orders to stay back,” instead moving into the center of the group. When an officer held out his arm, Reyes knocked it aside and “tried to advance on him,” said Det. Marshall. “The officer pushed him away and other officers took Reyes into custody after a short struggle.”
Reyes was charged with interfering/resisting officers; his son Isaac Reyes, 22, was arrested for possession of an illegal weapon and resisting arrest. Brian Gomez, 19, also of Santa Paula, was also arrested for resisting arrest. A 16-year old male juvenile was also placed under arrest for violation of curfew. No one was injured during the incident.Reyes was convicted of resisting arrest and obstruction after a three-day trial. During the trial, original responder Officer Wally Boggess, who had first noticed the subjects loitering and pulled over to question them, spent “hours on the witness stand for something that probably took a total of five minutes to occur,” noted Det. Marshall. Det. Marshall, Sr. Officer Daryl Koranda and Officer Cody Madison were also involved in the incident.“It seems that Reyes’ defense attorney was trying to work towards a civil lawsuit for injuries, but once Reyes was found guilty that nixed that,” said Det. Marshall.
