A very strong rushing game overwhelmed the Cardinal defense Friday night at Carpinteria, as the Warriors beat the Cards 32-27.
Cardinal rushing leader Jon Duran came back in the second half but the clock ran out before Santa Paula could catch up. Bobby Perez scored the first Santa Paula TD in the first quarter on a 48-yard run.The Warriors had a 17-7 lead at the half and early in the third quarter they jumped to a 25-7 advantage. The Cards came alive at this point. Duran scored two touchdowns, one off a 57-yard run. Quarterback Anthony Bavero took the ball across the goal line from one yard out for a third TD.Duran scored again the final quarter with an 11-yard run.“Offensively, we played well enough to win,” said Coach Ed Gomez. “In fact if the defense could’ve stopped Carpinteria sooner on their last drive, I believe the offense would’ve scored the game winner. But, would’ve, could’ve, and should’ve don’t mean much in the league standings. We didn’t get the job done. Their offensive line dominated our defensive line and they won the game.”Gomez said he was proud of the fact that they kept playing. “The guys never quit, and that is one of the concepts that we focus on in our program,” he said.
