By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesOn the heels of the most successful ever De Colores Art Show & Festival comes Fandango, gearing up for Sept. 4 and offering day of music and folklorico dance and more.De Colores Marketing Director Carmen Guerrero told the City Council at the Aug. 2 meeting that the Labor Day weekend Fandango will feature a variety of entertainment, a Mercardo filled with artists and vendors as well as a Jolly Jump and special children’s corner where face-painting will add to the fun.The Fandango will be held from noon to 8 p.m. at the Railroad Plaza Gazebo and feature the vibrant sounds of jarocho, huasteca, and mariachi music from the Veracruz, Huasteca and Jalisco regions of Mexico. Performers include Ballet Folklorico Mestizo de Oxnard College accompanied by Mariachi del Valle and the Familia Moraza (also debuting their first jarocho CD). Las Huastequitas, Trio de Colores, Trio Playa Azul with Michael Leal, John Robles & Company, Xolotilzcuintle and Daniela Flores and Yammina are also featured. The timing of the Fandango, co-sponsored by the city, coincides with the month honoring Americans of Mexican/Spanish descent, said Guerrero, and will dovetail with the city’s Summer of 2004 First Weekend of the Month events.Guerrero has also been working with area hotels including the Glen Tavern and Santa Paula inns to offer get-away packages for out of town visitors who might arrive in time for Cruise Nite on Sept. 2 and also wish to visit the Airport’s First Sunday event.
“I will talk to the restaurants,” about similar promotions, she added. This second annual Fandango has a presence throughout the state via Web sites and Guerrero as well as De Colores Founder Xavier Montes are doing a marketing blitz to bring more visitors to the musical event.“It’s wonderful and the city seems to like it,” as well as visitors, a sore point for at least one other town which has complained about Santa Paula’s rising popularity as a destination, said Guerrero.Santa Paula’s Fandango is the largest according to many of last year’s participants, and “We have people calling us asking when it will be again…I know it will be great!”Sponsors are still being sought, Guerrero noted.
