By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIt was indeed a golden moment when the top prize winners of the 6th Annual “Las Medallas de Oro” Santa Paula High School student exhibit were lauded at the opening reception for the young artists at the Santa Paula California Oil Museum.Selecting their best ceramics, commercial packages, drawings and paintings from a year’s worth of work was a challenge for the art students, who framed their finest artworks for display in the exhibit now taking place in the Keck Gallery. For the past five years, Santa Paula High School art students have prepared their artworks for display once a year at the California Oil Museum. Three years ago art teachers Ellen Park and Mariann Romero, along with museum curator John Nichols, expanded the student art exhibit to include an art competition, and “Las Medallas de Oro” was born.“This exhibit is part of the ‘Students As Educators’ program in which high school students present two exhibits per year at the museum. The program began in 1999 and is funded by a grant from the Timmons Foundation,” said SPCOM Director Mike Nelson.“Las Medallas de Oro” means “The Gold Medals” and the possibility of winning one of the four first place gold medals or runner-up ribbons adds excitement to the students’ preparations. A panel of professional artists judged all of the student artworks exhibited.“This year the winners were selected by a team of local judges: Judy Klement and John Nichols (Commercial Art), Judy Triem and Hennah Hombardy (Ceramics), and Xavier Montes and Wendell Dowling (Fine Art),” said Nelson. “Their efforts to jury the art show are appreciated.”
