Councilman Ray Luna said that upcoming projects have garnered wide interest and if a completion date has been forecast.“We hope to begin a year from now and take about nine to 10 months on the construction,” said SPESD Finance Director Mike Busch.Vice Mayor Mary Ann Krause noted that the joint use resolution related to both the Isbell and Bedell facilities and asked if state funding would cover both projects.“I’m proud to share that the Isbell project is number three in the state,” but that the Bedell project has a lower funding priority, said Busch. “We’re asking that both be included,” as Bedell’s chances could rise if another state funded project falls out of consideration.Working with the schools can be a “huge plus” in providing more services to citizens as well as students, noted Mayor Gabino Aguirre. The full council approved the new joint agreement.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesTo cinch a sizeable state grant the city and Santa Paula Elementary School District signed a new more specific agreement for joint use of the gymnasium planned at Isbell Middle School. The council agreed to the new document at the June 28 meeting.George Morgan, president of the SPESD board, noted that the community strongly supported the gymnasium as well as cafeteria construction at Bedell Elementary School.“The state has approved our plans for both buildings, even agreed to come up with a big chunk of the money,” but requires a more specific joint use agreement, Morgan said.SPESD Superintendent Luis Villegas noted that the projects have been in discussion for over two decades, and “your support is another indicator of the positive relationship,” forged between the city and school district over the past few years. The gymnasium will “benefit a lot of young people,” and not just students, Villegas noted.
