By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesCruise Nite packed them in on Friday when tåhe kick-off to the sixth season opened by filling Main Street with classic cars stretching all the way from 8th to 10th streets.According to Santa Paula Police Senior Officer Henry Aguilar, a Cruise Nite co-founder, about 140 pre-1975 vehicles were on hand as car owners and visitors crammed the thoroughfare and jammed to the music of JAM.“We had new vehicles come into the show and that’s good,” said Aguilar. “It was the first time come to our Cruise Nite and told me they’d heard about and would be back.”The First Friday of the Month event – which lasts through October – is as unique as some of the machines it draws, he added.“Our Cruise Nite T-shirts, at other events you don’t see shirts like ours featuring a real, local car,” said Aguilar.
Featured Friday was the special Wendell Dowling-designed T-shirt – the noted artist designs all Cruise Nite shirts - featuring the circa 1950s pickup truck of the late David Salas, an enthusiastic Cruise Nite supporter and participant.“David passed away last year and we decided in his memory to do his pickup on a T-shirt for this first Cruise Nite. It was also a way of saying thanks for all of his support for the Cruise Nite program,” said Aguilar. “The shirt was a sell-out,” as Salas’ family stood by his proudly parked pickup. “The family was really happy with the shirts and parked their vehicle right there where the sales’ table is. David would park in front of where Cauch’s Drug Store used to be, that was the spot he picked,” each Cruise Nite to sit with family and other friends showing off their own pre-1975 classic vehicles.Overall, “it was a good show, and JAM is a great band. . .we’re already looking forward to May Cruise Nite,” Aguilar noted.
