By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesBill Grant was the recipient of the prestigious Kiwanis International Dunlap Award in a surprise presentation at the Nov. 14th Installation Dinner held at the Bard Mansion at Port Hueneme.“This is a very special award,” said Kiwanis Club Treasurer Roger Strange. “It’s been given to a member of the club since 1996 who reminds me of the Dura Cell Energizer Bunny; he just keeps going and going and gives our club 110 percent.”The recipient has been an enthusiastic supporter of the annual Citrus Festival and “just wants it to grow and grow; he attends City Council meetings and is a youth sports’ coach. He exemplifies the Kiwanis motto ‘We Build’ through his efforts,” including as the Chairman of the 2003 Citrus Festival, said Strange.Strange noted that Grant had worked with City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz to enlarge the annual club Citrus Festival that, with a change of venue and expanded activities, was a great success, Strange noted.Incoming District 42 Lt. Governor Walter Metcalf presented Grant with the Dunlap Award and pin and noted that “I know you will wear this proudly. . .”“This is a shock,” said Grant.
The success of the 2003 Citrus Festival was due to wider involvement on the part of not only club members and supporters but of City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz, said Grant.Such support and enthusiasm points to a “great future” for not only for the annual Kiwanis Club event - its major fundraiser - but also for the community as a whole, he added.Grant said he has enjoyed being a member of the Kiwanis Club and will devote the coming year to bringing in new members.Grant added that he did have one regret: “My wife Janet was unable to come tonight as she’s with our former Mayor Eleanor Crouch, but wait until I get home and show this to her!”“The Dunlap Award shows you went over and above in community service through the club,” said Luna.Club member Bill Moniot has also received the award, Luna added.
