Verizon Foundation awards $25,000 grant to Blanchard Library’s adult reading program, FLAIR

The adult reading literacy program at Santa Paula’s Blanchard Library has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation. In announcing this major gift, Verizon officials reported these funds will provide a major expansion in computer technology, related software and program personnel for the library’s successful FLAIR program.
“This is the second time our foundation has recognized the Blanchard Library for its innovative and effective literacy efforts,” said Verizon External Affairs Director John Dokken. “Literacy is a primary focus of the Verizon Foundation nationwide, and we are honored to recognize Blanchard’s continuing role as a leader in this area.FLAIR’s mission is to teach English reading and writing, job market skills and math by providing one-to-one tutoring for adults who need academic assistance in order to be more competitive in the job market,” said program coordinator Kathryn Bornhauser. “We are thrilled by this significant gift from Verizon, which will greatly enhance our ability to continue providing services and increasing the number of those served in our community in the months and years ahead.”In addition to academics, FLAIR provides an English as a second language program using small classes, instructors, English language tapes and computer software. Also under FLAIR’s umbrella are: The Families for Literacy Program, literacy based parenting classes, and the Angels in-school tutoring program.
