By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesTwo leading Santa Paula Realtors, Jim Garfield and Stuart Monteith, have new duties on the Executive Board of the Ventura County Coastal Association of Realtors. The VCCAR membership is drawn from Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura as well as the cities of the Santa Clara River Valley.Garfield became a Realtor in 1985 and has been the Owner-Broker of Cal-West Real Estate since 1991. A charter VCCAR member, Garfield was elected to his first term on its board and is chairman of the Local Government Relations committee.“This year it’s going to be a big deal, with what is coming with the fall elections,” Garfield noted. “Basically, what we are going to be doing is tackling issues in the local communities and taking positions if we think it is appropriate,” which, in turn, will be recommended for action by the VCCAR board of directors.“We recommended to the board and they came out in favor of the Adams Canyon proposal,” added Garfield, of the Nov. 5th ballot measure to extend the city’s development boarders for future development.“The local government relations committee is more issue orientated, but we will be interviewing candidates,” for possible endorsement.Such endorsements will be forwarded to Board of Realtors Political Action Committee, which Garfield said, “will be endorsing candidates. In fact, they just took action to endorse Phil Schmidt for County Recorder.”Monteith, known as “The Real Estate Lady” of Re-Max Gold Coast Realtors, has been licensed since 1988.
Monteith has been a VCCAR board director for over four years, “almost since its inception,” she noted.Currently in her second year as the Secretary-Treasurer, Monteith is the chair of the VCCAR Budget & Finance, Installation and Multiple Listing committees, Monteith is also active on the state level with the California Association of Realtors as a director. On the state association, Monteith serves on the Rural Forum Committee, Government Finance sub-committee, and is a director of the Real Estate Finance Committee.“This year anyway,” Monteith said with a laugh. “Last year I was on several different committees.”VCCAR has about 1,200 members, its Multiple Listing service about 2,000: “It’s two separate entities from the same board,” said Monteith. The state association has over 99,000 members, she added.“The public is not aware that the state and local associations represent the only consumer protection group of its size in the state. There is no other organization that works to preserve property owners’ rights, nobody else does it, which I thought was very, very interesting.”
