By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesRose M. Chacon and Katherine Chacon have a lot in common: in fact, they both graduated on the same day from the University of California Northridge with degrees in Child Development. After years of balancing work with study, the Chacons could have earned secondary degrees in determination. The Commencement Ceremony was held May 24 at the new California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo; Katherine’s degree includes a minor in Psychology. Both she and her stepmother plan on teaching careers, said Bob Chacon, who made sure the two were celebrated with a special post-graduation party held at Logsdon’s at the Santa Paula Airport attended by about 75 family members and friends.“They’re both very happy, I’m very happy,” said Chacon. His wife, Rose, has wanted to be a teacher “since she was about five years old,” and has been attending school “26 years. . .she was persistent,” in taking classes when she could - Rose works full time for the state Employment Development Department - to obtain her degree.
It took Katherine Chacon, whose dream of being a teacher was also strong, “about six or seven years to get through,” school with her work schedule - Katherine works part time for the county Transportation Department - factored in, Chacon noted. Katherine is also engaged to be married next year. The graduation of the Chacons means the end of their school relationship: “It doesn’t look like they’ll go to school together,” for the required two-year teaching credential. “Rose is going to attend California Lutheran University, Katherine hasn’t decided yet. . .”Bob Chacon said “a lot of my wife’s ambitions rubbed off on my daughter; I’m very proud of them both and they were thrilled about graduating together.”
