By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThere’s fertilizer and then there’s fertilizer, but 10,000 gallons of raw sewage that spilled from a blocked main sewer line is another matter altogether. The mishap, the second within a week, occurred Thursday, Jan. 24 about 10:45 p.m. The backup spilled sewage for about two hours early Friday near the 800 block of Faulkner Road on the west end of the city.A buildup of excess grease and debris is believed to be the cause of the blockage of untreated sewage, which flowed into a nearby basin and flower field.Workers from OMI Corporation, which operates the city’s sewer plant located on Corporation Drive, pumped the sewage out of a catch basin in the area but the remaining sewage soaked into the flower field, leading to a warning that the area be avoided until Monday, Jan. 28.
Another sewage spill occurred on Saturday, Jan. 19 when sewage overflowed at Corporation Yard on Corporation Drive. That incident featured partially treated sewage that was running into the Santa Clara River and into the area used by the Future Farmers of America for livestock housing.A fire department official estimated up to 200,000 gallons had overflowed during the Jan. 19 incident that lasted about two hours and could have been caused by a pump failure that might be tied to a computer malfunction. The Jan. 19 overflow incident included personnel summoned from the Ventura County Environmental Health Department and the Department of Fish and Game.
