A Fillmore man turned himself into authorities Tuesday following a fatal hit-and-run collision Monday that left a Santa Paula woman fatally injured.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Rolando Tejeda the December 28 incident occurred at 8:25 p.m. on Old Telegraph Road and 7th Street in Fillmore.

At that time, a blue 2006 Chevrolet Silverado stopped on southbound 7th Street — which tees off to Old Telegraph Road — at the posted stop sign.

Then, “For reasons that are still under investigation, the Chevrolet proceeded to enter the intersection into the path of a green 1990 Nissan Axxess,” mini-van, that was traveling westbound on Old Telegraph Road, which has no stop sign and vehicle right-of-way.

The front end of the Nissan, noted Tejeda, collided with the left side of the Chevrolet.

“The collision caused major damage to both vehicles,” and following the crash the driver of the Chevrolet fled the scene on foot before the CHP arrived on scene.

Maria Rodriguez Medina, 57, of Santa Paula, the passenger in the Nissan, was transported to Santa Paula Hospital where Tejeda said, “She succumbed to her injuries.”

Tejeda said the driver of the Nissan, a 60-year-old resident of Santa Paula, not yet identified, sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center.

Both were treated on scene by EMT firefighters from Ventura County Fire and Santa Paula Fire Departments as well as ambulance personnel.

Tuesday December 29 about 1:30 p.m. Brandon Leon, 30, of Fillmore turned himself into the CHP.

Leon, said Tejeda, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter.

The collision is still under investigation by the Ventura Area CHP Office.

Anyone who witnessed or has information regarding the collision is asked to call the Ventura Area CHP office at (805) 477-4100.
