Juaregui asked the board to put the matter on a future agenda. She said, “As I did with the Dave and Juliet Dike Tennis Courts, I plan to see this through, fundraising and design of the plaque and all, if it is indeed approved.”
School board to consider naming swimming pool

The Santa Paula Unified School District board is discussing setting a policy for the naming of school facilities.
The matter came up after community member Jannette Jauregui proposed the swimming pool at Santa Paula High School be named in memory of Mr. Roger Boles, Class of 1934. Boles lost his life while serving his country in the Navy in 1944. Ten days prior to his death, Boles wrote a letter to friends which read: “If our pool doesn’t come through the chain of command as it were, I have a couple of ideas I am working on. The time to get it, I think, is right after the war is over, and that is when you will need it most. Perhaps we can make it a memorial for those that won’t be back... Santa Paula should have a fine, modern pool to be used by the students during school and by the public the rest of the time. Keep that spot in front of the gym open”
Juaregui was successful in 2011, when the high school tennis courts were named after David & Juliet Dike. “She told the board, “My proposal is to have the pool named The Roger Boles Swimming Pool, a fitting tribute to a remarkable Santa Paula resident and one that will also, as Roger said, pay tribute and serve as a memorial for those that never made it home.”
Boles’ was buried in the Philippines. He was eventually returned to the U.S. and was laid to rest in Santa Paula Cemetery. Boles earned the Navy Cross and was twice given the Distinguished Flying Cross. A scholarship in Boles name was established at Santa Paula High School in 1947 and continues to be awarded each year.
