The extended filing deadlines for City Council and Blanchard Community Library is looming with those seeking elected office having until Wednesday at 5 p.m. to qualify for the November 4 General Election.
So far five of seven potential council candidates for three open seats have returned the paperwork and been qualified to run. Two of the four potential candidates for two library board seats have qualified.
Mayor Rick Cook announced last week he would not run for a second four-year term, which triggered the extended deadline; he had served two terms before losing his bid for reelection in 2006 and was returned to the dais by voters four years later.
So far, two-term council incumbents Ralph Fernandez and Bob Gonzales, former Mayor John Procter (who in 2008 declined to run for a third term), former Mayor Fred Robinson (defeated in 2012 in his bid for reelection to a second term), and political newcomers Jenny Crosswhite, Ginger Gherardi and John Demers have pulled nomination papers.
Demers, Fernandez, Gherardi, Gonzales and Procter have been qualified for the run by the Ventura County Elections Division. Still outstanding are filings from Crosswhite and Robinson.
The race for the two open seats on the BCL Board of Trustees so far has two qualified candidates, incumbent Laura Phillips and Tim Hicks. Since longtime Trustee Brenda DeJamaer declined to run for another term the filing period was extended until Wednesday.
The extension gives Dan Robles, the former longtime BCL librarian who was terminated in April, and Richard Dick Yamamoto time to file for the race.
Service on Blanchard Community Library is not compensated.
Each City Council term is four years; council members receive a $300 a month stipend plus approximately $11,150 annually for the citys cafeteria healthcare plan, a payment that can be pocketed if the council member has health insurance. The council also receives a small expense account.
The General Election is November 4.
