Baber Raitt

Charlotte Baber Raitt of Santa Paula, age 90, passed away on December 23, 2013.

Charlotte was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 22, 1923 to Josephine and Floyd Baber. Following the death of her father in 1933, she and her sister and mother moved to California to be with her grandmother, Clara Thomas. Charlotte and Bryan Legan Jr were married in 1941 and began their family in San Fernando, moving to Santa Paula in 1956 where the family found a church home at Santa Paula Presbyterian Church.

She worked joyfully and enthusiastically for rancher Paul Leavens Sr at his insurance agency, staying a number of years. In 1963 she began her delightfully rewarding career at Santa Paula City Hall, where she greeted citizens with her bright smile and cheery demeanor as front desk receptionist. During that period she married Robert (Bob) Raitt, long-time Santa Paula Union High School teacher. She retired after 20 years of service as the “Voice of City Hall”, joining husband Bob who had also retired, and together they spent their retirement years continuing their civic and educational activities, and traveling.

Charlotte was active in the Presbyterian Church, Friday Morning Prayer Fellowship, PEO (Chapter LR), American Legion Auxiliary, Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Santa Paula Hospice Community, AARP, VLSS (Vision Loss Support Services), and attended Braille Institute Classes. She became legally blind in the 1990’s due to macular degeneration and was an encouraging presence for others whose vision was fading. She was a special lady, eager to encourage and was a friend to all she met. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

Special thanks are given to friends and care-givers in her later years, especially Elva Perez and her family, to Rose, Stella and Gloria at Home Sweet Home, to Carlene Sikorsky, and to the 2008-2010 staff at The Palms.

Charlotte is survived by her daughter Bettijo (Bj) Legan-Adams and son-in-law Lou Adams of Ojai, California; by grandchildren Janet Calltharp (Chad) of Dallas, Robert Leonard (Jennifer) of Nashville, Aaron Legan (Jennifer) of San Diego, Paul Legan of Los Angeles, Jennifer Adams Robinson (Jason) of Dallas, and Michael Adams of Ventura; great-grandchildren Brittany Restivo, Brandon Bookhammer, Logan and Maci Claire Calltharp, and Antonia and Zandria Leonard; cousin Phyllis Whobrey (Lee) of Phoenix; and nephew Chuck Tilch (Bette) of Los Angeles.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Robert L. Raitt, her adventure-loving son Patric D. Legan, and her precious sister Lenaclaire Tilch.

A memorial service will be held Friday, January 10, 2014, at 11:00 am at the Santa Paula Presbyterian Church, 121 Davis Street, Santa Paula. Memorial donations may be made to the Santa Paula Presbyterian Church, or to Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association.

John Carlton

John C. Nasalroad passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 20, 2013 at the age of 69.  For the past several years John had struggled with serious health issues.

John was born in Los Angeles on June 26, 1944, but spent almost his entire childhood in Santa Paula.  He graduated from Santa Paula Union High School in 1962 and attended Ventura College for two years.

John worked for Southern California Edison Co. in Ventura for over 30 years and retired in the late 1990’s.  Most of his career at Edison was spent working as a hydraulic pump test specialist.  John made many friends with the farmers in the agricultural community with the tests he performed on their water pumps to help improve their electrical efficiency.

Shortly after retiring John moved to Palm Desert where he lived for over 10 years.  Three years ago he returned to the area and bought a home in Ojai to be closer to friends and family.

Before John’s health began to decline he loved to host big barbeques and pool parties for his friends and family.  John also enjoyed fishing and golfing.  But his real passion was his yard and home.  He had a reputation for being a bit of a “neat freak.”  The landscaping around his home was always meticulously manicured, and his vehicles, his house and his tools and were always spotlessly maintained.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Viola Nasalroad.  He is survived by his children, Ryan (wife Gretchen) Nasalroad and Tisha Nasalroad and three grandchildren: Derik and Jessica Nasalroad and Daniele Ibarra.  He also leaves behind his brother Gary Nasalroad and sisters Susan Garner and Debra Seabaugh.

A memorial service will be held for John On Saturday, January 11th at 3:00 p.m. at the Life Way Baptist Church, 673 W. Santa Paula St. in Santa Paula.  Rev. Bob Walpole will be officiating.  A reception will follow.
