Both the Cardinal JV and varsity ended the regular season with losses to the visiting Nordhoff Rangers Friday. The JV suffered a 34-8 loss and the varsity was shut down, 51-8 in the Tri-Valley League final.

Nordhoff, the defending CIF Champions, came on strong from the start, scoring their first touchdown two minutes into the first quarter on a 25-yard run. Santa Paula fought back, sacking the Rangers’ quarterback midway through the first quarter, forcing Nordhoff to punt. The Cards couldn’t convert the sack into a touchdown and had to punt a few minutes later. The first quarter ended with the Rangers leading 7-0. Nordhoff scored three more times in the second quarter.

By the end of the third quarter, the Rangers had increased their lead to 51-0. The Cardinals managed their only touchdown in the fourth quarter. A two-point conversion gave them 8 points for the game.

Coach Mike Montoya commented after Friday’s game, “Nordhoff is a very good team. They are the defending CIF Champs. We knew that every league game this year would be a tough game to say the least. Still, our effort and togetherness never wavered. We were fortunate enough to make the playoffs for the first time in a few years and we’re very excited about that.”
