By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe Rotary Club of Santa Paula hosted one of its own when writer, humorist and Realtor Floyd Hair who at a recent meeting addressed the members on a variety of subjects.Hair, a native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, first joined the Santa Paula Rotary in 1963 and was honored with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1994. He and his bride, Pauline, have been married over 70 years. An April Fool?s Day baby, Hair was born on April 1, 1908.At the Rotary Club meeting at Logsdon?s at the Santa Paula Airport, President Elias Valdes noted that the business motto of Hair, a former City Councilman, was ?Get Ahead With Hair!?
The Hair family moved to Santa Paula in 1954 and Hair, who said his experience has shown him that ?small incidents, or words overheard, are often the things that starts one in a new direction. The winds of change, imperceptible at first, begin to blow and events happen of the type to give one pause to think about the future.?Such a new direction was Hair becoming a Realtor, serving on the City Council and as President of the Chamber of Commerce and being selected Citizen of the Year in 1978.A founding member of the Santa Paula Community Fund, which oversaw the effort to retain the historic Depot, Hair told Rotarians that service to family, friends and neighbors ranks high on his list. The author of ?Middle American,? an autobiography published in 1989, Hair also writes a column regularly for the Santa Paula Times.Hair told the Rotarians, at times using poetry or quoting famous philosophers, that as he approaches his 94th birthday, appreciation of what he has accomplished - family, friends, community and business - and his deep belief in God have carried him through the decades, and will continue to carry him through the future.
