Girl Scout Gold Award Project: “Everybody Loves Reading”

October 02, 2013
Santa Paula News

Sarah Jordan has been a Girl Scout for 9 years with Santa Paula Troop 60287.  This week, Sarah completed her Girl Scout Gold Award Project which was to set up a Library at Vista Cove care Center at Santa Paula, a local Nursing Home.  Sarah started her project by interviewing the residents who live there to get a wish list of books. With the help of Book Drives held by the members of Soroptimist International of Santa Paula, and donations from family and friends; Sarah was able to get all the books on the wish list to include in the library.  Soroptimist also provided a bookshelf to hold all the books collected.  The Activity Staff at Vista Cove and volunteers, like the students in the Santa Paula High School Human Services Academy, will use the library to enrich the lives of the residents who utilize it by helping them find books of their interest, reading to residents or hosting a Book Club.

“The most exciting part of the project was having residents showing interest in all the books collected before I could even get them on the shelf!” says Sarah Jordan, a recent graduate of Santa Paula High School (Class of 2013) and a Freshman at Cal State Channel Islands.

Sarah would like to thank her Project Advisor, Jackie Vigil, Vista Cove’s Activity Director, her Girl Scout Troop Leader Marilyn Appleby and all people who supported her during this Gold Award Project.
