Halos Go 1-2 on Weekend Against So Cal Catch after Friday loss at SLO

The Santa Paula Halos lost their first series of the 2013 summer season to southern division foe, the So Cal Catch. On Saturday the Halos fell 13-6 in the series opener. Jeff Paschke (USC) led the Halos offensively going 3 for 5 with an RBI. Kevin Torres (LA Pierce) added 2 hits and an RBI. Allen Gwynn (SPHS-CSU-Bakersfield) was saddled with his first loss of the summer.

On Sunday in game two of the series, the Halos came from behind for a 6-5 win in 10 innings. Collin Yelich (UNLV) gave the Halos an early 2-0 lead blasting his first home run of the summer. Then Santa Paula fell behind 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Nick Murphy (LA Pierce) led off with a single followed by an Allen Gwynn double. Colton Waltner (USD) drove in Murphy with a single. John Brontsema (UCI) then hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Gwynn making the score 5-4. After a hit batter and strike out, Ryan Xepoleas (George Washington) drove a ball to left center enabling Waltner to score the thing run. Jeff Paschke, who came in relief in the fifth inning threw four shut out innings. The Halos threatened to score in the seventh and eighth innings but came up empty. Finally in the bottom of the tenth, the Halos got the first two runners of the inning on base. Connor Graham (St. Mary’s) hit a grounder to third, the third basemen threw to second to start the double play but the throw was wide and it enabled John Brontsema to score the winning run. Earning the win, pitching a scoreless tenth inning was Doug Christie (Hawaii Pacific),

The Halos dropped the series finale 4-1 in game two of the Sunday doubleheader. The Halos fell behind early, giving up 2 runs in the third inning. In the fifth inning the Catch would score 2 more runs. In the bottom of the fifth the Halos Jeff Paschke scored on Allen Gwynn fielder’s choice. Tre Halibuton-Goeas (Hawaii Pacific) received his first loss of the summer.

Halos lose in Friday away game

In the battle for first place in the CCL North Division, San Luis Obispo came out victorious 8-4. Santa Paula fell behind in the third inning 3-0, but clawed back with a solo homer by Ryan Xepoleas (George Washington) in the top of the fourth and scored three runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two run single by Aaron Gomez (CLU) to take a 4-3 lead. The Blues came back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and tacked on another run in the bottom of seventh. The Halos did not help themselves offensively by stranding 13 runners on base and only scoring one run in two bases loaded situations.

The Santa Paula Halos earlier got a 6-3 win over the Santa Barbara Foresters.  

Brayden Torres (UNLV) pitched six strong innings giving up only one run and striking out eight while scattering six hits.
