Cardinal varsity baseball team out after 14-6 loss at Flintridge

The Varsity boys traveled to Flintridge Prep for their second CIF baseball game, following a 10-0 wildcard win over Marshall.
Flintridge came out the winners with a 14-6 final score against the Cardinals. It was the Rebels’ first playoff win since 1999.
The Cardinals’ playoff quest ended in the first round after a 10-5 Frontier League record. Their overall record was 14-12.
The Rebels got their first run in the second inning. The Cardinal bats were silent until the fifth inning when Ramiro Avila and Gabriel Diaz each scored. Flintridge answered with a several runs, putting them ahead 4-2. They followed with five more runs in the sixth inning.
The Cardinal bats finally came alive in the seventh inning, but it was too late to overcome the Rebel’s lead.
Head Coach Gabe Diaz said the season was a success. “Coming into this season we had a lot of varsity players coming off other sports,” he said. “We didn’t have a full team practice until 1 1/2 weeks prior to our first game. We had to introduce some of our returnees to new positions and bring up JV players to play positions they haven’t played since little league. Although filling a roster of 5 seniors, 4 juniors, 3 sophomores and 1 freshman we competed in a tough non-conference and Frontier League schedule.”
He said the pitching this season was deeper than it’s ever been in his five years as head coach. Seniors Ryan Montelongo and Gabriel Diaz, Juniors Ramiro Avila and Anthony Jimenez, Sophomores Alex Rios and Rocky Frutos and Freshman Tony Contreras all contributed on the mound this season. Avila finishing with a record of 6-1, Jimenez 5-4 and Contreras with 4 saves. They were the workhorses of the staff.
Offense was just as consistent. They had five players hit over .300. Leading the offense was Avila, Eddie Perez and Diaz. Avila propelled the offense hitting .437, Perez .379 and Diaz .312.
Diaz added, “We were very fortunate to have a solid coaching staff.” JV coaches are Ed Gomez, Tony Morgan and Phil Arellano and Varsity coaches are Martin Montelongo and Johnny Manzano. We couldn’t have been as successful at both levels without these group of dedicated coaches.”
