The Cardinal varsity took a first half 14-0 lead over the visiting Carpinteria Warriors Friday night, but finished with a 35-22 loss.

Santa Paula controlled the game in the first half, forcing the Warriors to give up the ball on fourth downs.  The Cards first touchdown came with four minutes in the first quarter.  Corey Peck caught a short pass in the end zone and the point after kick was successful.  Shane Zavala intercepted a Carpinteria pass with seconds left in the quarter.

That interception led to another TD in the second quarter, this time by Juan Carlos Magana from 8-yards out.  Santa Paula maintained possession of the ball for almost the first half of the quarter.  Neither team made any headway after that before the half.  Magana came away with two TDs and 140 yards.

Carpinteria came alive seconds into the third quarter, scoring their first TD from 60 yards out.  Santa Paula tied the game at 22-22 in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard run by Magana, but two more Warriors touchdowns after that sealed the win.  Santa Paula attempted an onside kick with the game tied but the Warriors recovered the ball on the Cardinal 48-yard line and scored on their first play.

Coach Teojua Sanchez said, “This was a difficult loss. We were winning 14-0 at halftime and we allowed them to get back in to the ball game. I thought we played well both offensively and defensively in the first half. I believe penalties, turnovers, and some miscues haunted the team in the second half. However, we had our chances in the second half. I was proud of the way the team played in the game and we will prepare for Nordhoff this week.”

The Cards play their final game of the season Friday night at Nordhoff, starting at 7:30 p.m.
