Pastels are dry pigments and produce works with a somewhat dreamy effect highlighted by rich color. Dry pigments are mixed or ground with the liquids called vehicles to form paint. Pastels, the basic dry pigment, are often shaped into pencil like forms. When completed, the pastel must be framed under glass to retain the artwork although pigments that are more resistant to deterioration are now manufactured. Depending on the classification of pigments they can be opaque or transparent. An enduring art form, many of the Old Masters - including DaVinci and Degas - worked in pastel. The Ventura County Pastel Artists exhibit will feature a wide array of pastels in different styles by about a dozen of the county’s finest award-winning paste artists. Exhibiting members of the VCPA produce a minimum of 10 to 20 new pieces of pastel art each year and its members hail - aside from Santa Paula - from Ojai, Oakview, Ventura, Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley: works by Jannene Behl, Pat Green-Gaudet, Carol Merrick, Bert Collins, Heather Mobarak, Doris Scott, Shirley Coons, Jane McKinney, Anita Hedy Muller, Jennie Scott, Kathryn Crowder, Page Mitchell, Arlene Origoni and Jane Ray will be featured along with Judy Klement. The VCPA artists were last featured in a special Spring exhibit, “Pastels in May,” at the Casa de la Luna in Ojai, where they also have a Fall showing. For more information about the exhibit or the Santa Paula Society of the Arts, call 525-1104.
