Briggs Migrant Debate Team participates in Migrant Speech and Debate Tournament
The Briggs Migrant Debate Team participated in the annual Migrant Speech and Debate Tournament on Saturday, April 21st and brought home first place trophies for their conjoined effort in out-debating five other Ventura County teams in the Middle School - English category. Team members (Victor Magana - 8, Daniel Pena - 8, Ashley Aguilar - 7, Ivana Montalvo - 7, and Angel Garcis - 6) not only received trophies, but they will be traveling to Sacramento the weekend of May 4th to debate at the state competition.
Coaches Dara Stork and Kelly Sutton could hardly contain their excitement and pride for their debaters when the Briggs name was announced for first place. The topic this year for their category was Schools shall ban all food that is not nutritious. Teams have to prepare for both the affirmative and negative side of the argument and do not find out which side they defend until the beginning of each of the five rounds.
This wonderful program was started by Mr. Joe Mendoza of the Ventura County Migrant Education department in Camarillo. Students are fed breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the all-day event.
