SPPD Officer Reynolds honored as Public Safety Officer of the Month

A longtime Santa Paula Police Department officer and a dedicated elementary school teacher were honored by the Chamber of Commerce during the June Good Morning Santa Paula!

The monthly meeting, the last of the season, was hosted by First Western Bank.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA longtime Santa Paula Police Department officer and a dedicated elementary school teacher were honored by the Chamber of Commerce during the June Good Morning Santa Paula!The monthly meeting, the last of the season, was hosted by First Western Bank.Chief Bob Gonzales introduced a “good friend of mine, Officer Troyce Reynolds,” honored as the Public Safety Officer of the Month.A member of the SPPD since 1982, Officer Reynolds was raised in Ojai. “He’sa spirited type of individual; the police department hired him when he was 19 and he graduated from the police academy,” said Chief Gonzales.Officer Reynolds was awarded a Medal of Merit in 1991 for entering a burning building on Christmas morning: “He went in the front door and they went out the back,” but Officer Reynolds - not aware the residents had escaped - searched for them, “putting his own life at risk.”
Officer Reynolds, a Citizens Patrol Training Officer, “Came into his own being a Traffic Investigator. . .some accidents are nothing, but when a major accident occurs especially with a fatality,” a highly trained investigator is required.Chief Gonzales said Officer Reynolds has “distinguished himself,” with his accident scene and follow-up investigative skills by examining the vehicles, taking measurements, checking tire surfaces, road makeup, weight impacts, other matters related to the cause of the incident.Officer Reynolds determined that the driver of a van was exceeding the speed limit when her vehicle crossed the center divider and killed two people in a second vehicle. “He had a forklift come in and recreate where the cars were,” at the of impact, noted Chief Gonzales.Officer Reynolds also works with the city engineering department in road design and improvement.Selected for the Public Safety Officer of the Month by his peers, Chief Gonzales noted that several SPPD officers are “a pretty good size, but when we go to bar fight who we first send in is Officer Reynolds!”“I’ve been here a long time and really love Santa Paula,” said Officer Reynolds, who was accompanied to GMSP! by his daughter, Troi, 14. “I appreciate this award. The city and citizens have been good to me, the chief has been good to me, took me under his wing and trained me,” and his own on-the-job experience refined his law enforcement skills.The Public Safety Officer of the Month award is sponsored by John Macik and Santa Paula Chevrolet.
