Working with the Sespe Group, the student artists go a step further by designing and installing the exhibit themselves, from creating entry forms to posters, invitations to exhibit signage and artwork labels. In addition, the artists are planning and hosting Saturday’s opening reception and Awards Ceremony.Last year 75 student artists took part in the multi-media show: this year will be just as spectacular: a Timmons Foundation grant is again making this exhibit possible, giving Santa Paula High School art students a showcase for their best works as well as affording them the opportunity to learn museum curating skills.
Romero, a Santa Paula native and SPUHS grad, teaches computer and commercial art; she and art teacher Peck have gained a reputation for encouraging their students to “try anything” in order to give wings to their creative expression.Studies have found that when students have a creative outlet, whether it be art, music or writing, among others, their overall grade average improves. Art expands the mind and many student artists find themselves becoming professionals in the arts or related fields.“Las Medallas de Oro” will showcase computer graphics, ceramics, watercolors, charcoal, tempera and masks. Students who exhibit their art works in a professional setting brings their work to life as it takes it beyond a classroom project. The exhibit is not only a broad representative of all student talents and the different art-related courses offered at the Campus on the Hill, but display technique.“Las Medallas de Oro” will be exhibited through July 22. The California Oil Museum is located on corner of 10th and Main streets and is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the museum is $2 adults, $1 children.
