By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesSanta Paula Police are investigating a drive-by shooting incident involving a vehicle containing small children, which was fired on Saturday evening near a highly traveled intersection. It is believed that the incident could be gang-related as the suspect is an alleged gang-member.No one was injured in the shooting, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on April 21, according to SPPD Sgt. James Ward.A report of shots fired in the 200 block of Palm Avenue was received by the SPPD at 7:08 p.m. When officers responded to the scene, they discovered that the incident had actually occurred near the intersection of Palm Avenue and Main Street, where the occupant of a small, dark vehicle had fired several shots from an unknown type handgun at another vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle that was fired on, a 22-year-old unidentified male, had five passengers in his car, including two small children. A bullet struck the vehicle in the driver’s door. The suspect vehicle then peeled off and fled northbound on Palm Avenue.A possible suspect has been identified and the investigation is continuing; the identity of the driver of the vehicle that was fired is being withheld until further investigation is completed. The unnamed suspect is an alleged gang member, said Sgt. Steven Carter, and there are indications that the crime was somehow gang-related: “The victim was too afraid to cooperate at this point. . .he wouldn’t even come out of his house to talk to the investigators. Detectives had to get the information from other sources,” who witnessed the drive-by shooting.
