* A total of 30 volunteers donated 91 volunteer hours to help count, sort, and stuff backpacks.
Through United Way’s partnership with School on Wheels-a nonprofit that provides one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for homeless children as well as providing students with backpacks, school supplies, and uniforms--the community was asked to donate new school supplies to benefit children who are homeless, living in shelters or foster care. Volunteers stuffed 300 backpacks with the donated school supplies which were given to School on Wheel to be given to the children they serve.
On Monday, June 21 - the longest day of the year - United Way of Ventura County launched its “Stuff the Bus” campaign which was part of the United Way’s Day of Action. United Way asked the community to stop by libraries located throughout Ventura County from June 21 - June 30 to donate (stuff) new school supplies inside yellow, pop-up school bus bins. In addition to the donation of school supplies, individuals also made monetary donations to the campaign which was used to purchase backpacks and additional school supplies.
Day of Action was created in 2008 by United Way Worldwide as an opportunity for local United Ways across the country to declare their intention to improve lives in measurable and lasting ways by mobilizing people around a common goal: Advancing the Common Good.
