A celebration of the arts with live music, an art exhibit, puppet making and art classes for children, spoken word performances and short films will be held at Casa del Mexicano this coming weekend.
“Epoca Nueva” - Fuego del Futuro: A Mixed Media Art Show” is free and offers three days of activities at the Casa, located at 218 S. 11th Street. The celebration, held in conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. three-day holiday, will also include a special exhibit highlighting the history of the Casa. Artist Kate English told the City Council at the January 4 meeting the event is “the brainchild of a small group of local artists” who plan on a “huge event,” including an art show that will continue to be exhibited at the Casa through January 20. “The first three days will be filled with music and food; the Casa is generously hosting the event for us,” which starts Saturday, January 16 from 5 to 11 p.m.
Readings at the event will be a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., which will continue Sunday, January 17 from 1 to 11 p.m. and Monday, January 18, 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday will feature children’s activities, including a puppet show and a puppet making workshop, as well as painting classes.
Entertainment will include The Shoddy Cons, The Clouds, We Govern We, Gill Sotu, Dusty Drawers, Frank Barajas, Litmore, Octus Ray, Deepakalyps, and Spinobi, the former DJ for Ozomatli and Yeti.
“I really appreciate the Casa opening up their space” for such events, said Councilman Dr. Gabino Aguirre. “The Casa does a lot of things for the community” that the organization does not receive credit for.
“This,” Aguirre added, “is one of these things” that will not only benefit the community, but also raise the profile of the Casa and its activities. Although the event is free donations are appreciated.
