By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesBig surprises can be small, especially when it comes to art, and the Santa Paula Society of the Arts is holding a special show and sale at their Depot Gallery/Gift Shop where smaller is bigger... and a bigger bargain for art lovers. According to Louise Saviers, the special show and sale at the historic Depot, located at the corner of 10th and Santa Barbara streets, is “small images, a show that the art has never had before.”The small images, those paintings that can be a maximum 9 inches by 12 inches, are hung on the Gallery wall, while a variety of arts and crafts are featured in the Gift Shop. Among other handmade items for sale, “We have greeting cards, gift tags, shadow boxes and some boudoir lamps, all,” noted Saviers, “new material.”When it comes to the small image paintings, the Gallery is exhibiting more than 20 for sale, and small image also means the prices “are less expensive than the larger paintings we have,” although, noted Saviers, “we have new large paintings also” created by noted Santa Paula Society of the Arts members.
Another reason for the special show is to raise awareness the Society is back in the Depot after an approximately seven-month long ambitious renovation. “It’s freshly painted inside and we have new carpeting the society would like to thank the city for,” and Saviers said all art lovers are urged to visit.“It’s great to be back in our Depot home, it’s lovely, really nice,” said Santa Paula Society of the Arts President Lynda Gruber. The special small image and arts and crafts show and sale actually began at the recent SPSA Mixer celebrating “our return to the Depot” and, Gruber said, “we decided to keep it going throughout August, leave it up and give a chance for more people to see it.”The Santa Paula Society of the Arts Depot Gallery and Gift Shop is open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. If you would like more information on the Society, visit its website at www.thespsa.com or call 525-1104.
