City Treasurer/Assistant Finance Director Sandy Easley showed off the towering trophy at the May 18 City Council meeting.“As you are aware,” City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz told the Council, “our city team was very successful” in bringing home the top division trophy for the third time over a five-year period in the six-week long competition. “Mrs. Easley,” he added, “is one of the ringleaders here” of city participation in the games.Easley noted that many city staffers in the audience, as well as those she enticed to the lectern, took part in the challenge: “We knew what we needed to do” to cinch the final rounds and garner the top prize resulting from their determined and winning pull in Tug-O-War.Albeit the 1st Place prize in the specific category is a shared one, reflecting the game’s first ever three-way tie in their shared division. The City of Santa Paula team tied with the District Attorney’s Office and Mission Produce with 74 points, and Easley said the trophy would be rotated with the winners every four months.
The city team took the Gold for Billiards, Bowling and Tug-O-War, the Silver in Co-ed Softball, Golf, Horseshoes and the 5K Run, and the Bronze in Basketball. The city team also participated in Darts, Dodge Ball, Table Games, Indoor Volleyball and Lazertag.City Corporate Games team members also took part in Spirit Events, including Run/Walk/Jog, Sand Sculpture and Community Service. Easley told the Council about 51 city employees participated in the 2009 Corporate Games.Aside from the thrill of victory, Easley said, “It’s great to work beside employees from other departments whom you don’t always have the chance to work with.”The 2009 Corporate Games included more than 60 teams culled from private and public entities throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. The final day of the competition was held at Ventura’s Harbor Cove Beach and featured the Tug-of-War won by city staffers, who pulled in enough points to tie for a first place victory.
