By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to release the identity of a man struck and killed Sunday on Highway 126 just east of Santa Paula that caused a chain reaction accident when one vehicle was hit by another after hitting the pedestrian.Details of the accident were scare at press time Monday, but the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene, a half-mile east of Willard Road, at about 5:20 p.m. and found two vehicles damaged and the pedestrian dead on the highway; the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian received moderate injuries.According to CHP Sgt. Mike Cooper, the pedestrian - wearing all dark clothing - was crossing the unlighted highway from the north side to the south when a westbound vehicle him in the second of the four lane roadway. The pedestrian’s body was thrown about 30 feet upon impact. The driver of the mid-sized car that hit the pedestrian braked and then swerved to avoid traffic but was struck by a second car also traveling westbound. The car that hit the pedestrian was knocked into a shoulder area drainage ditch and the second driver was able to stop their vehicle on the highway shoulder.
So far there is no indication that the incident could have been a suicide, according to a CHP spokesman, although “Crossing a busy highway like that at night could be considered a suicidal act, I guess. Traffic is fast through that stretch and there’s not any time to avoid something in your path, especially at night.”The CHP closed one lane of Highway 126 in each direction, slowing traffic through the area, but all lanes were opened about two hours later at 7:20 p.m.The CHP spokesman said they do not know how fast traffic was traveling at the time of the accident. The as yet unidentified driver of the car that struck the pedestrian, a woman, was injured and transported to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital.
