Man arrested for allegedly negotiating cash demanded at Fillmore bank

A Santa Paula man who allegedly attempted to rob a Fillmore bank on Saturday morning was arrested after he was thwarted by a teller’s request for identification, and then the suspect attempted to negotiate a smaller sum of money. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the unarmed man entered the Santa Barbara Bank & Trust branch office, located at 566 Sespe Ave., on July 12 at about 10:15 a.m.The man verbally demanded $10,000 from the teller, who asked him for identification. Instead, he wrote a note that dropped the amount to $400. During the negotiation, other bank employees called 911 and reported a robbery in progress.
Deputies responded to the scene and apprehended the suspect - who did not receive any cash - without further incident. The suspect, Phillip Guevara, 42, of Santa Paula, was arrested and booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery and for an outstanding warrant for possession of a deadly weapon.Bail in the amount of $110,000 was set for Guevara. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit and the FBI are investigating the incident.
