The race is on for the November 4 Presidential General Election - well, almost - with the filing period now open for a variety of offices throughout Santa Paula and Ventura County.

According to County Clerk and Recorder Philip Schmidt’s office, the official nomination documents for eligible candidates desiring to file for any elective district offices started July 14.If all incumbents on any of the City Councils, school boards and special districts file in a bid for reelection, the filing period will close at 5 p.m. on August 8. If an incumbent fails to return nomination papers by the deadline, the period will be extended five days, until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13.Santa Paula will see a variety of races, with two City Council seats - held by incumbents Ray Luna and John Procter. The terms of City Clerk Josie Herrera and City Treasurer Sandy Easley are also expiring.Two Santa Paula Union High School Board Trustees, Catherine Sepulveda and Bob Salas, are facing the end of their elected terms, as are Santa Paula Elementary School District Trustees Gary Marshall and Ofelia de la Torre. Two seats are also expiring on the Briggs School District, and one on the Santa Clara School District.
The terms of three Blanchard Community Library District Trustees are also at the end of the elected term, as are four Directors - each representing a different area - of the United Water Conservation District.Nomination papers require the signatures of registered voters and a bill that must be paid - at least the deposit - if the candidate wishes to have a statement in the Ventura County voter’s guide. Nomination documents for city offices must be obtained and filed with the City Clerk, and subject school districts handle the paperwork for candidates.Elsewhere throughout Ventura County, Fillmore will have three City Council openings, City Clerk and Treasurer; Simi Valley, Oxnard and Moorpark voters will select mayors as well as Council members; and Ojai, Camarillo, Port Hueneme and Thousand Oaks will also see Council and other elected official races.County Clerk and Recorder Schmidt has a message for those not able to cast a ballot on November 4: “Register to vote - then vote.”
