The accident occurred at the intersection of 10th Street and East Harvard Boulevard on Sunday, October 21 at about 2 p.m., said SPPD Lieutenant Mike Saviers.“An on-duty fire engine was responding to an emergency,” with sirens and lights activated as it headed southbound on 10th Street, as a 2003 Windstar van was traveling westbound. “As the engine got to the intersection the engineer slowed, activating his air horn to clear traffic,” but as he started into the intersection he saw a vehicle also enter the area.
The engine and the van, driven by Maria Gonzalez, 25 of Santa Paula, collided. Firefighter Bryan Eaton was transported to Santa Paula Hospital complaining of pain to his lower back. Gonzalez was transported by private vehicle to Santa Paula Hospital, with complaints of chest pain.Saviers said that Gonzalez told investigators that “she did not hear” or see the approaching fire engine until she entered the intersection and then was unable to avoid a collision. Gonzalez’s van “suffered major damage to the right front area, and the engine suffered minor damage to the left front” section.
