By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIf you’re looking for the unusual and want to have plenty of fun while searching, the Flying Flea Market at the Santa Paula Airport promises to be one super shopping experience, especially if you’re an aviation buff. The Flying Flea Market will be held during the regular First Sunday at the Airport, October 7 from 9 a.m. - no early birds please! - to 3 p.m.The Flying Flea Market will be held during the monthly Open House and the Aviation Museum’s String of Hangars will be open for touring. Promising plenty of hard to find unique items, including vintage to newer airplane parts, collectibles, home furnishings, tools, arts, crafts, aviation memorabilia and antiques, the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula Gift Booth will also be open for the Flying Flea Market. The event is benefiting the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula, and Board Director Janice Dickenson said the idea sprang from trying to do something different. “We’re always looking to try new ideas for museum fundraising, and started talking about how we have all this stuff stored in our hangars and garages. We thought let’s have a sale and see what happens.”
The event, Dickenson added, “is functional and we’re all having fun buying and selling... and it’s something we can do strictly on our own,” without relying on the sponsorships vital to the museum’s other fundraising efforts. Coming up with the name was easy: “After all, the museum does have a Flying Flea,” a world famous aircraft designed in 1934 by Henri Mignet of France.Dickenson said the upcoming Flying Flea Market is garnering strong support from airport tenants, as well as from dozens of outside vendors who are renting booths at the event. “We’re getting a very good response,” including those Santa Paula Airport aviators who are donating “everything they make from the flea market to us... they’re being overly generous!”For more information, email the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula at amszp@verizon.net or call 525-1109.
