The topic of the monthly special event to be hosted by Planes of Fame Air Museum at the Chino Airport on Saturday, August 4 will be the Korean Air War. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a seminar on the war in the air over Korea, and conclude with a flight demonstration of the Planes of Fame MiG-15, the Russian fighter plane that was the principal aerial opponent to United Nations operations on the Korean Peninsula in the early 1950s.The first major armed conflict between democracy and communism, the Korean War was also the very first conflict in which jet aircraft fought against each other. The introduction of the Russian MiG-15 jet fighter into the conflict in the winter of 1950 came as a shock to the United Nations forces, and it was only the timely intervention of United States Air Force North American F-86 Sabre jets that prevented the Communist forces from establishing aerial superiority over the battlefield.Among the first examples of swept-wing jet fighter plane technology, the MiG-15 and the F-86 were fairly evenly matched in performance. However, superior pilot training and tactics enabled American Sabre jet pilots to establish a victory-to-loss ratio over the MiG-15s in the neighborhood of ten-to-one.The first permanent air museum in the American West, Planes of Fame is now in its 51st year of operation as an independent, non-profit, educational institution. The museum was also a pioneer in the concept of restoring display aircraft to flying condition for public viewing. Planes of Fame supports its daily operations with admission fees, donations, facilities rentals and proceeds from the use of its aircraft in various productions.
Planes of Fame also has a special membership program available to the public, with one of the benefits of membership being the opportunity to actually experience the thrill of orientation flights in genuine warbirds. At each monthly special event, members in attendance, including last-minute sign-ups, can have their names entered into a free drawing for a warbird orientation flight.Planes of Fame Air Museum is open to the public every day, except Christmas and Thanksgiving, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. General admission is $11, youngsters 11 and under are admitted for $4, and admission is free for accompanied children under 5.For more information about Planes of Fame Air Museum or its program of events, please call (909) 597-3722, or visit the museum’s website at www.planesoffame.org.
