By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Paula cocktail lounge that experienced a bit of recent trouble got more on Sunday when a fight took place outside leading to three men receiving minor injuries, according to a SPPD official. The SPPD received a report at about 9:30 p.m. on July 1 of people fighting and breaking beer bottles outside Sancho’s in the 100 block of West Harvard Boulevard. One man, it was reported to the SPPD, was breaking bottles over people’s heads.Three men - ages 25, 26 and 31 - received “very minor injuries, the most serious injury was a cut on the nose” that was treated at Santa Paula Hospital, said SPPD Chief Steve MacKinnon. When SPPD Officers arrived on scene “people were still stirred up but the assailants had already left the area. The potential was there for problems but it just didn’t develop,” he noted. “It is my understanding that it started inside and kind of tumbled outside.”Although “we periodically have problems” at area bars “we don’t have any indication” that there are specific persons causing trouble again and again.
“This was probably the largest incident we’ve had that we’ve responded to,” noted Chief MacKinnon. “Before. it’s been typically one or two persons causing the problem” but in such cases more people can become involved due to the “emotionalism with the situation” as happened at Sancho’s.With drinking the “potential” for problems “is always there, that’s why the SPPD does walkthroughs” of all area bars.“No one establishment is worse than the others and the Officers try to have a real strong presence in those establishments.”Chief MacKinnon said that bar owners are at high risk of licensure impacts if trouble occurs at their place of business. “In the past we’ve worked with the ABC and come down alone also,” for bar monitoring including serving those who are underage as well as “disruptions that can impact their licenses” ranging from fines to revocation of the license. In recent weeks SPPD Officers had responded to Sancho’s for the report of a fight inside the bar but upon the arrival of law enforcement the crowd dispersed without further incident.
