K-9 Rex flushes out wanted felon, apprehended on Laurie Lane

The threat of K-9 action was too much for a wanted felon who surrendered after he learned that K-9 Rex was searching for him inside a residence, according to a Santa Paula Police Department spokesman.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe threat of K-9 action was too much for a wanted felon who surrendered after he learned that K-9 Rex was searching for him inside a residence, according to a Santa Paula Police Department spokesman.The incident occurred Thursday, March 15 at about 2 p.m. according to Sr. Officer Ryan Smith, who was on patrol when he spotted Alejandro Perez, 26 of Santa Paula, wanted for numerous felony charges, in the 300 block of Laurie Lane.While on routine patrol in the neighborhood, Sr. Officer Smith first spotted Perez, considered to be “armed and dangerous,” standing in the doorway of a residence.“Perez then ran onto the sidewalk and when I turned around he ran back inside the house,” disobeying the officer’s orders to stop.Sr. Officer Smith took up a position outside while awaiting more SPPD units and once they were on the scene they surrounded the residence and ordered Perez to surrender.Perez “failed to comply” with the officers’ orders and they, with the assistance of K-9 Rex entered the residence to search for Perez.
Officers “gave several announcements for Perez to come out, and we said the dog was coming was in...”When K-9 Rex was in the hallway Perez “said ‘I’m here, I’m coming out” and he came out with his hands up,” said Sr. Officer Smith.Perez surrendered without further incident.Perez was arrested and charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a firearm, vandalism and criminal threats.Sr. Officer Smith said that the charges were “related to a previous incident that occurred in the 300 block of Laurie Lane several weeks ago.”Officers discovered that Perez had been staying at the residence where he was apprehended.Perez was transported to Ventura County Jail where his bail was set at $20,000.
