By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe Las Piedras Community Center is inching towards reality, the City Council learned at the May 1 meeting, with ground expected to be broken sometime this summer. The center, a project of HomeBoys Inc. of Ventura County, is to be located at Las Piedras Park in the area where Saticoy and 13th streets intersect, according to plans, but Building and Safety Director Steve Stuart said that the “final actual site” has not yet been determined. The site will depend on clearance requirements to accommodate such needs as parking, he added. The complex is designed to include a meeting room/study hall, banquet room, kitchen, 1,000 square foot plus activity room, business office/control center, restrooms, fitness center and daycare center. The design allows for separate entrances for each community area.
Creation of the community center - to be funded by HomeBoys Inc. - has been ongoing for years, and included input from residents of the Las Piedras Park area. Stuart said that staff is “continuing to work with HomeBoys, and we’re now in the structural design phase... we’ll get the plans finalized before we bring them back to the Council.”Community Services Director Brian Yanez has also been working with Stuart and HomeBoys on the design and plan for the new center. The center could also offer a gymnasium, “hopefully in the future” through a second phase, noted Stuart.“I’m very pleased to be here, glad we finally got to this point,” said David Allen of HomeBoys Inc., the designer of the project. “The best news is that we finally have the money in the bank,” after several false starts in securing funds. Allen added that he wanted to add his “thanks for everybody sticking with us... you will be rewarded with a great” community asset.
