Those hoping to buy Pan American Seed flowers will have to set their alarm clock early. The Our Lady of Guadalupe Church Plant Sale will be held Friday starting at 7:30 a.m., according to Church Secretary Patricia Huerta. If there are flowers left from Friday’s sale – which will end at about 3 p.m. – flowers will again be on sale starting Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m.Each year, Pan American has a unique raffle for its employees: winners receive all the flowers displayed the previous week – when the facility is showcased professionally as well as hosting the Hospice Garden Tour – and in turn donate the winnings to their favorite charity. This year Delia Pina of Santa Paula was the raffle winner who donated the flowers to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.“The Pina family from our parish won and they will benefit us,” said Huerta. “It is very generous and thoughtful. The flowers are just beautiful!”Huerta said each year since at least 2002 – when she joined the staff of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church – the Pan American plant sale has been a popular event. “Pan American brings a whole truckload of flowers, and if there are any leftover from Friday we’ll have another sale on Saturday,” she noted. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is located at 427 N. Oak St., and the Pan American Plant Sale will be held in the courtyard behind the church hall.

The skies were clear Sunday for a very special tour of the world famous Pan American Seed Company, which opened its Santa Paula growing facility on behalf of the Santa Clara Valley Hospice Adult Day Care Center.

Those unable to make Sunday’s tour – or who would love to own some of the magnificent flowers they saw at the Hospice event - will be able to enjoy Pan American Seed’s flowers starting Friday at a special plant sale benefiting Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.Last Sunday, Pan American’s numerous greenhouses and beautiful landscapes were on display for the more than 300 Hospice supporters who toured the facility, said Hospice Board President Cathy Barringer. Although Pan American has generously opened its doors to Hospice in the past, this year the flowers were particularly impressive, noted Barringer.“I think it was more beautiful than it has ever been,” with the outdoor gardens offering seating arrangements and both the landscaping and greenhouses showing off the array of Pan American products. “It was very, very lovely,” including the refreshments provided by Pan American, said Barringer.Among its other fabulous flowers, Pan American Seed is the developer of the famous Wave Petunias, a flower now that includes the Double-Wave, Tidal Wave and Easy Wave, all offshoots of the Purple Wave introduced in 1995.
