Assemblywoman Strickland receives California Leadership Award

Assemblywoman Audra Strickland (R- Thousand Oaks) received the prestigious “California Leadership Award” from the California Animal Association yesterday evening, for her outstanding leadership in crafting new animal protection laws.

Assemblywoman Audra Strickland (R- Thousand Oaks) received the prestigious “California Leadership Award” from the California Animal Association yesterday evening, for her outstanding leadership in crafting new animal protection laws. Last year, Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law Assemblywoman Strickland’s Assembly Bill 820, closing major loopholes in state animal regulations.“I am honored to receive this recognition from the California Animal Association,” commented Assemblywoman Audra Strickland. “Thanks to groups like the Animal Protection Institute, California now has tougher laws that will protect both the public and exotic animals.”In addition to immediate reporting requirements for missing animals, Assembly Bill 820 requires the Department of Fish and Game to establish guidelines for the safe recapture of exotic animals. The Animal Protection Institute, a national animal advocacy organization, worked with Assemblywoman Strickland as a sponsor of AB 820.
Coauthored by Assemblyman Ed Chavez (D- Industry) and Assemblyman Lloyd Levine (D- Van Nuys), Assembly Bill 820 was introduced following the Moorpark tiger incident. The Moorpark tiger incident highlighted major problems and inadequacies in current state law. Before introducing Assembly Bill 820, Assemblywoman Strickland gathered the Department of Fish and Game, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, and local city officials to discuss the inadequacies in state law.Assemblywoman Audra Strickland represents the 37th Assembly District, including the communities of Camarillo, Chatsworth, Fillmore, Los Angeles, Moorpark, Newbury Park, Oak View, Ojai, Piru, Santa Paula, Simi Valley, Somis, and Thousand Oaks.
