Cards shut down Nordhoff after blocked shot sends game to overtime

It was a real nail-biter Friday night, as the Cardinal boys’ varsity beat Nordhoff in overtime, 58-48. There was 29 seconds left in the game and Santa Paula was ahead 46-45. A free throw by Nordhoff tied the game. The Rangers went for three points as the clock ran out and a block by Johnny Urrutia stopped that shot, forcing the game into overtime.Nordhoff had control of the court for much of the first half, but Santa Paula came alive in the second half, outscoring Nordhoff 20-11 in the third quarter and 13-10 in the fourth.Chepe Lara was out for most of the fourth quarter because of fouls, but his teammates showed they were more than a one-man team, even though he scored the most points for the Cards with 14. Urrutia followed with 11 points, an assist, 3 rebounds and the 1 blocked shot. Lara also had 11 rebounds and a steal. Andrew Carrera and Daniel Kolbeck each added 8 points apiece. Carrera had 2 rebounds and Kolbeck had 6. Johnny Carrillo hit for 7 points and had 8 assists. Daniel Cardoza had 4 points, 1 assist and 6 rebounds.Nordhoff concentrated much of their defense on stopping Lara from scoring, double and triple-teaming him.
In the overtime period, Santa Paula scored 7 points early on and out-shot the Rangers 12-2 in the four minutes of OT. The Cardinal defense stepped up and kept Nordhoff away from the basket. This win put Santa Paula at 5-1 for Frontier League play.The Cardinals play their final regular season game Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. at home against Oaks Christian, currently in first place in the Frontier League. Santa Paula lost to Oaks Christian in January 52-41.
