By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIt’s time to pick up the phone and call the Do Not Call Registry to avoid pesky – and what could be very expensive – cell phone calls from telemarketers. Formerly top secret cell phone numbers will be made public in mid-January when they are released to telemarketing companies. The release of millions of cell phone numbers will no doubt launch an onslaught of sales calls to garner new business.Although consumers have been protected by the Do Not Call Registry for their landlines, cell phones have been a different matter… with the release of cell phone numbers consumers could see their cell phone charges hit the roof. At the very least, telemarketers contacting cell phone users could eat up free minutes, which still equates to money lost.To remove your cell phone number via the Do Not Call Registry, use your cell phone to call 1-888-382-1222. Cell phone owners can also register online at www.donotcall.gov. Registering your cell phone number will block your number for five years.
The California Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Trade Commission paired up to create the Do Not Call Registry to help stem the hundreds of unsolicited sales calls that a single household can receive throughout the year. Some people forget that they can also register their Fax phone number to eliminate those pesky missives offering everything from dream vacation packages to hot stock tips that eat up paper and ink. To register a Fax machine number on the Do Not Call Registry, the Fax phone must be used to register or go online to sign up.After a phone number is registered with the Do Not Call Registry, it takes about 31 days for telemarketers to receive the news that your phone is no longer cold call friendly. According to a Do Not Call Registry representative, if a registered phone number receives a telemarketer call after 31 days, a complaint can be filed with the registry. The consumer must get the company name or a phone number to file a complaint, which can be done through the Do Not Call Registry, 1-888-382-1222 hotline or online at www.donotcall.gov.
