Edward Barron, 26, could have received up to 15 years in prison after his conviction on the charges that led to his shooting in the 2002 bust outside his West Santa Barbara Street home.If Barron had not been disabled, his sentence would have been much harsher than the three years probation he was sentenced to on Monday, according to Deputy District Attorney Ron Carpenter of the Major Narcotics Unit.
Barron had been investigated for months leading up to the confrontation that led to the shooting that occurred when Drug Enforcement Agency agents and Santa Paula Police officers arrived at Barron’s home. Barron was outside when the police units arrived, and headed to the front door of his home where family members - including his small children - were inside. The DEA agent fired on Barron, striking him in the back of the neck and in the face, after Barron pointed a handgun at him, an action that Barron denied. Barron filed a $35 million civil rights lawsuit three years ago against the DEA and the city of Santa Paula. The lawsuit was nullified by Barron’s convictions on the weapons and drug charges unless he can successfully appeal.Barron attended the court hearings accompanied by family members, who have been providing him with the around the clock care he now requires. He has been confined to a wheelchair and needs constant attention, something that a state prison would be unable to provide, according to Carpenter.
