The City Council learned at the April 11 meeting that employees had donated more than $7,300 to the United Way’s area chapter during the latest giving campaign.Eve Liebman of United Way of Ventura County presented the recognition, and noted that UWVC “takes great pleasure in presenting you with a beautiful award that represents the fundraising efforts of” city staff and management. “United Way of Ventura County is honored to recognize employees and management for their generous fundraising and leading the way of community support” for UWVC.
Liebman also recognized Community Services Director Brian Yanez as chairman of the City of Santa Paula United Way of Ventura County fundraising capital campaign effort. “We are really proud of his efforts,” noted Liebman.United Way of Ventura County provides funding to a variety of area programs and projects including the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Paula, Services United of Santa Clara Valley and Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group, among others. With the economy sagging amid the Iraq war and rising energy prices contributions to charities have suffered, but city employees have stepped up to the plate of giving more and more in recent years. It wasn’t until City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz joined city staff in October 2002 that United Way giving picked up at City Hall, where support of the program had been lackluster due to the lack of a concentrated effort to give. Bobkiewicz also took a lead role in promoting the new 211 social services hotline, a program overseen by UWVC and Interface Children Family Services.
