Mireille Vargas, a junior at Santa Paula High School, was recently appointed as the new Student Representative to the Santa Paula Unified Vargas said she hopes to learn about the District’s present and future plans regarding her high school as well as gain a better understanding of how the school district operates. She also would like to improve her public speaking skills.
“While other students my age have fun by going to dances and hanging out, I enjoy presentations and more of what goes on behind the scenes,” said Vargas about her appointment to the Board. “I also find it an honor to be able to represent my peers when it comes to decisions that will directly affect the students.”
Vargas plans to bring her insight as a student to the Board as someone who is involved in many clubs including SESPEA (Students Encouraging Social Political and Environmental Action) and the Key Club.
“I’m an attentive person who cares about my peers being heard,” she said.
As far as the future is concerned, Vargas has her sights set on a career in the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) field, but she is not sure what her major will be in college.
“Right now I’m interested in Environmental Science since I’ve had some experience in learning about that subject in a club that I am in,” Vargas said. “However, I’m not dead set on anything right now and I have changed my mind a bit. I have thought of majoring in chemical engineering, physics, or being a statistician. I’ll even admit that I have wondered about minoring in political science.”
For the time being, Vargas would like to explore other fields to find out what she does and doesn’t enjoy in order to narrow down the careers that she would be interested in.
