A Santa Paula man has been sentenced to four years in state prison for being a registered sex offender in possession of child pornography.

David Michael Sellers, 67, had earlier pleaded guilty in August.

In October 2014, a probation sweep that targeted a dozen residents to check for their compliance with the terms of release found that Sellers had “obscene material” and he was arrested on a felony warrant.

In January a search warrant was served on Seller’s home and the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office High Tech Task Force found more than 300 images of child pornography in his computer.

In 2007, Sellers had been required to register as a sex offender after pleading guilty to possessing over 10,000 images of child pornography on his computer. In that case, which occurred in 2005, Sellers took his computer to an Oxnard store for repair. When the technician discovered the child pornography he notified law enforcement.

Santa Paula and Oxnard Police worked with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office High Tech Task Force on the investigation.

Sellers was also required to register as a sex offender when he entered a guilty plea to two misdemeanor offenses when he went to court. At that time Sellers was sentenced to 180 days in jail and three years probation although Deputy District Attorney Howard Wise had asked that Sellers be sentenced to the then maximum of one-year in jail.

As of September 20, 2006, the legislature changed the child pornography laws. Possession of child pornography may now be charged as a felony and, upon conviction, a state prison sentence may be imposed.

Sellers was sentenced to four years in a state prison for the latest charges under the new guidelines.
