An 8-year-old Santa Paula boy is recovering after he was stabbed in the back Saturday afternoon in a busy local park.

According to Santa Paula Police Sgt. Scott Varner, SPPD Officers responded August 1 at approximately 3:50 p.m. to Teague Park, located in the 500 block of West Harvard Boulevard, for a call that a stabbing had occurred.

When officers arrived on scene they found an 8-year-old boy had been stabbed in the back, a small laceration that Varner said, “To my perspective did not appear to be a major wound...”

Santa Paula Fire EMTs and an AMR ambulance paramedic treated the boy at the scene.

Varner said although the injury did not appear serious, it “met the criteria for AMR to transport the victim to the Ventura County Medical Center’s Trauma Unit,” for evaluation and treatment of the wound.

Upon investigation officers and detectives learned a 14-year-boy had allegedly stabbed the victim and “Contacted him at his residence that is in close proximity to the park,” and Varner said the unidentified juvenile was taken into custody.

What led up to the stabbing is still being investigated although Varner said “It sounds like maybe they were involved in some kind of an argument at some point...it was a busy day at the park,” with many visitors.

The older boy “used a knife, it looked like a folding, pocket type knife,” in the attack, an incident that Varner said is “very unusual...”

Varner said that to his knowledge the 14-year-old juvenile has not had prior contact with police.

The juvenile, Varner added, was interviewed and “may have been cited and released to the custody of his parents,” while the investigation continues.

If anyone has information regarding this incident they are asked to contact Detective Shane Norwood at 805-525-4474.
