Four Santa Paula gang members and associates were arrested early Thursday morning on suspicion of firing last week on what they thought was a gang rival that turned out to be mistaken identity.

No one was injured in the Friday night incident that SPPD Commander Ish Cordero said occurred about 9:30 p.m. in the 200 block of South 11th Street.

Cordero said the April 17 incident involved the driver of a dark pickup truck who while driving in the area was suddenly fired upon.

“His vehicle was going by and some guys came out of the house and started shooting at his pickup truck,” an act police believe was related to an earlier incident.

On April 1 there was a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting that involved two dark-colored pickup trucks that had stopped at the intersection of Steckel Drive and Santa Barbara Street.

No was injured in that shooting and both vehicles sped away from what was the third such incident that week.

Cordero said Friday evening, “Our victim was in his dark-colored pickup truck driving in the 11th Street area and the gang members identified this truck as the one possibly involved in other incidents with their ‘homies’…it was mistaken identity.”

The shooting was “Retaliation, but against the wrong person, he was just an innocent guy going by there and ‘kaboom!’ ”

The intended victim was not hit by flying bullets but his vehicle was struck several times.

Once he left the area the man called police.

“Our victim did not have the particulars on the attack,” being unfamiliar with the neighborhood but Cordero said an investigation conducted by patrol officers and continued the following day garnered information on the identity of the suspects as well as their residences.

Further information was developed Monday and the search warrant obtained.

“We were there at 5 a.m.,” said Cordero, who noted the early hour of the warrant searches and arrests was due to the location of one home that “backs up to Grace Thille School…we did not want to jeopardize any innocent people,” by the visit of the SWAT Team, K9s and support personnel.

SPPD Officer Shane Norwood said those arrested “without incident” are all Santa Paula residents, and included Rudy Cardoza, 40, a documented gang member; Ricardo Contreras, 35, also a documented gang member; Mitchell Cardoza Jr., 18, a documented gang associate; and an unidentified 17-year-old juvenile who, “At minimum” is a gang associate.

The four were booked at Santa Paula Police Station and transported to Ventura County Main Jail where bail was set for each at $500,000.

A loaded handgun was also recovered during the warrant searches that occurred at two locations on South 11th Street.

Norwood said eyewitnesses supplied information to police during the investigation and warrant searches that also yielded “other evidence that is possibly related to the crime…”

He added that District Attorney’s Office investigators assisted police and “They were very helpful.”
