Briggs School District bond measure easily passes
Published:  November 07, 2014

Measure “K”, the $4.6 million dollar bond measure in the Briggs School District won approval by voters Tuesday with 67.63 percent yes votes and 32.37 no votes.

That came to 303 people in favor of the measure and 145 opposed.

Briggs Superintendent Deborah Cuevas was very happy. “I’m basking in the glory of having it pass,” she said. “We did our homework, walked the area and went in knowing the community was behind us.”

She said the next step will be to form an oversight committee. A local, independent citizens’ oversight committee will be established to ensure that bond funds are properly spent and an annual audit is also required.

The money will be used for much-needed renovation work at Briggs School as well as some needed projects at Olivelands School. Cuevas said safety and security will be “first and foremost.”

Cuevas said they have a growing enrollment and there are much needed repairs, especially at Briggs. For one they can no longer cook in the kitchen, so students get reheated, flash-frozen meals. The school’s windows are almost 100 years old and can no longer be safely opened and a portion of the money raised would go towards air conditioning the buildings. Another project will be to increase student access to computers and modern technology.

Other future projects would include replacing the old storage barn and putting in a track behind the school. The estimated cost to each property owner in the district will be $30 per $100,000 of assessed valuation.
